Boardmasters 2019? Yes please!

Here are our 5 favourite things about Boardmasters surf and music festival this year! You can be sure we’ll be donning our Hawaiian shirts after the 2pm surf lesson and heading over to the cliffs at Watergate between 9th and 11th August, for a little boogie!

The surfing

As the years go by, more and more English hopefuls are asked to compete against some big names. This year in particular, we’ve got our fingers and toes crossed for a new batch of younger, frothing surfers, some pretty local to here! Emily Currie, Ben Skinner, Tassy Swallow, Luke Dillon, Adam Griffiths, Lucy Campbell, Jack Unsworth, Jobe Harris, Pete’s mate Jo Dennison, Mawgan Porth’s very own Angus Scotney, the list goes on… Geddon the Brits and good luck!!

The music

There are tunes galore, something old and and something new, for the 15 year old groms to their parents. Watch the sunset at the chilled acoustic stage with stunning, dramatic cliffs as a backdrop. Gaze up at the massive main stage for the big-name crowd-pleasers. Get involved in the classic circus tent for all the moshers out there. Or meander through the maze of weird underground tunnels, for the garage, dance, hip-hop and electronic lovers.

The food

If you in the mood of for a bit of international food, something vegan and organic, or a good old burger, they’ve got you covered. There’s even an oyster tent at the music festival too. In and around the various event sites, if you’ve got a hankering for something, you will be able to find it there. Our favourite is the Keg & Pasty stage, to listen to a few sea shanties, a lush (and local) pint of Betty Stoggs, and a large steak and ale pasty.

The weather

The location

The surf comp at Fistral contributes to it’s competitors’ world ranking. The WSL (World Surf League) obviously recognises Cornwall as having a lot of potential, using it as a stage to watch some of the world’s best, showing off their skills. We can easily walk from Mawgan Porth to music festival site. And if you are wanting to hit the waves yourself, whilst the water in Watergate and Fistral will be rammed, we love being just over the hill, where it is often quieter (and usually with better surf too).
